The Can-Am represented the emergence of professional sports car racing in the U.S., with prize money that exceeded anything in racing except the Indy 500. McLaren quickly became the team to beat, but rarely was anyone able to achieve that. This photo was taken in the pits of the very rst race at Road Atlanta and shows how accessible drivers were in those days. This race was held shortly after the tragic death of Brice McLaren testing the new M8D shown here.
