Peter Revson
1970 12 Hours of Sebring
This shot was taken about 9 PM as everyone realized that the Revson/ McQueen Porsche 908 might win the race. The fatigue shows on Revson’s face as he prepares to go out for his last stint. He had driven the majority of the race since McQueen had a broken left ankle and was not as fast. Mario was catching them in the second place Ferrari 512 and only Peter had a chance to hold off charging Mario. He couldn’t.
As opposed to today, flash photography was expressly forbidden anywhere in the pits at Sebring or Daytona. You had to shoot with available light and that was difficult since many pit areas were just lit by a bare light bulb or two. We would “push” Tri-X to 1600 ASA with special developers and this helped, but you had to shoot wide open, so focus was critical.
