Vic Elford and Jim Hall
1970 Road Atlanta Can-Am
When it was initially conceived, Can-am had no rules except the car had to have two seats and four wheels. Jim Hall took them at their word and designed (with substantial help from GM) the 2J “Sucker Car.” Initially, Hall had Jackie Stewart driving, but Vic Elford had been brought in to drive at Road Atlanta and here he listens attentively to Jim Hall’s last minute instructions before the start. The 2J was amazing to watch – it cornered like a slot car and you could hear the snowmobile engine that powered the fans all the way around the track. Vic was always very pleasant during practice and was one of the few drivers I would actually have the nerve to talk to. But on race morning, he was totally focused on the job.
