Danny Sullivan / Penske-Chevrolet
1988 CART Meadowlands GP

I stopped shooting races in the mid-1970s as the gas shortages and rules changes ended the “glory days” of endurance racing. However, I got involved again in the 1980s through my job in automotive public relations. I arranged for my client, Exide batteries, to sponsor Al Unser Jr. in Indycar racing. I was able to get team credentials and would attend as many races as I could.

Indycar in that time was another special period of racing with many great drivers, any of whom could win on any Sunday. Danny Sullivan was one example. He had won Indy with his legendary “spin and win,” and this year was again driving for Team Penske with Miller beer sponsorship. Here he is coming through the esses on the parking lot Meadowlands course. I found a hole in the fencing where I could lean out a bit and get the shot.
