Lothar Motschenbacher
McLaren M8D
1971 Road Atlanta Can-Am

In the period from 1967 to 1972, McLaren dominated the Can-Am; everyone else was competing for third place. Lothar Motschenbacher was the “best of the rest,” noted for his meticulous preparation and consistency. Like many other teams, he relied on customer versions of last year’s McLaren, but always ensured it was prepared as well as it possibly could be. This car is actually Denny Hulme’s car from the previous year and Motschenbacher finished 3rd in the race, behind the two team McLarens of Revson and Hulme. This photo was shot with a 500 mm lens, panning Lothar going at about 150 mph.
